USING THE USPTO DATABASE
When you access the U.S.PTO WebSite (using our link), you will find a list
entitled "Issued Patents" which includes three main search options. If you
know your patent number, click on the "Patent Number Search" option. The "Quick
Search" and "Advanced Search" options allow key word locating of similar
inventions, useful during a search process.
All patents issued since 1976 are available in full-text format. Earlier patents issued between about 1790 and 1975 are mostly available as "full-page" images. In other words, a scanned copy of the original patent. PATENT NUMBER SEARCH If you have clicked on the "Patent Number Search" option, you will be immediately taken to a form which has a window for entering the known U.S. Patent Number. When the number is entered, click the "SEARCH" button. You will now be taken to the patent document for viewing. By following the various menu selections, you may be able to download or order a copy of the patent. Images include all the original pages of the printed patent, including the drawing figures. Images are stored in ".TIFF" or ".TIF" format and may not be viewable without installing a plugin in your browser. You will need a plugin which is capable of handling the .TIF file formats. You are strongly urged to use this free public document service offered by the U.S. Patent Office. The downloaded .TIF images will produce a black and white paper copy comparable to "ordered" paper copies when printed on a modern inkjet or laser printer. |

Recent patents presented and discussed on
this site are now presented only in .PDF format. You are urged to use the
official patent
office website [www.uspto.gov] to download true .TIF copies of the patents for viewing
or printing. We have discontinued presentation of recent patent drawings in either
.GIF or .TIF format. We find that the .PDF format results in smaller download files
and better print copies. All of our earlier .TIF and .GIF patent drawing files will
be changed to .PDF files (as time permits). Most modern computers include a
capability for displaying .PDF files. You may download a .PDF viewer for FREE by
visiting
Acrobat.com
and following the relatively easy on-screen download and installation instructions.
